Because of the Doctor trial and sensationalism of it in the media, I ground your site and articles.
I have been an ER RN for many years, and I used to hate the drug addicts and "Doctor Shoppers" we dealt with daily...... Then, in 2009, I got sick. I have been on pain killing drugs for 3 yrs now. Thank God I am NOT the addictive type. I hate the way all of them make me feel, and have no idea how anyone could take them for pleasure or recreation.
That said, I have also seen the attitude that you seem to have become pervasive, basically, that only "terminal" people should be getting this nasty drug, due to those who abuse the drugs?
I have seen the glares, the hiding behind the counter clerks obviously talking about me trips to the Pharmacy to fill an RX, and 3 Doctors "quitting" on me because they were nervous I was going to cause them trouble because I was not getting better....
Before 2009, I took nothing but ibuprofen for a daily backache, but was in great physical condition, much younger in looks than years, and even a Free-Dive Spearfisherman... Today? On Social Security, just had surgery #5, and now have an intra-spinal Morphine pump. I will now be able to go back to work, will no longer have the horrible side effects of oral painkillers (including the "high", which is horrible), but more than that, won't have to be judged by society as just another pussy who can't cope with pain.
Walk a mile in ones shoes, remember?
So just don't forget when you folks, and all those doting parents who apparently were clueless their kids would/could abuse prescription drugs, get the stuff banned outright, or at the very least get Doctors so scared that they don't dare prescribe any, how many people will needlessly suffer. How many scores of people use these meds for years, decades, and don't abuse them or die? What about them?
You mention the drug taker who crashed into the family and killed them.... Like that is any different than an Alcoholic driving and killing them? What, no push to convict beer makers of murder? No calls for the banning of alcohol sales due to the 10 or 20% that abuse alcohol??
Abusers will ALWAYS exist... So will clueless parents that refuse to see the self-destructive attitude of their kids early enough to change it.... Who started the Adderal thing??? Parents who couldn't handle their hyper kid, that's who.... Think about it folks...
